If you are planning a family portrait session in Geneva, one of the first questions is always the same: where? The right location does far more than provide a backdrop — it shapes the light, the mood, and the rhythm of the entire session.

Over the years I have photographed families in many corners of Geneva and the surrounding region. Here are the locations I return to most often — and what makes each of them special.

1. Parc La Grange — Timeless Elegance on the Lake

Parc La Grange is my most frequently recommended location for families who want something classic and refined. The park offers mature trees, a beautiful rose garden, open lawns with gentle slopes, and views over Lake Geneva.

What I love most about this park is the quality of light in the late afternoon. The canopy filters the sun into soft, golden patches — perfect for creating portraits with depth and warmth.

Best for: families with young children, multigenerational sessions, spring and summer.

2. The Old Town (Vieille Ville) — Character and Texture

Geneva’s Old Town offers a completely different aesthetic — narrow cobblestone streets, weathered stone facades, wrought-iron details, and hidden courtyards. For families who want something with an urban, editorial feel, this is an extraordinary setting.

I particularly love the quieter side streets around Cathédrale Saint-Pierre in the morning, before the crowds arrive. The architecture gives images a sense of place and permanence.

Best for: older children, couples, editorial-style family portraits.

3. Jardin Anglais and the Jetée des Eaux-Vives

The waterfront along Jardin Anglais and the pier at Eaux-Vives offers wide open skies, reflections on the water, and the dramatic backdrop of the Jet d’Eau. In autumn and winter, the light here is remarkably soft and even.

For families who want images that feel open, airy and connected to the lake, this is one of the finest stretches in the city.

Best for: families who love the water, golden hour sessions, autumn and winter.

4. Domaine de Penthes — A Hidden Gem

Less well known than the central parks, the Domaine de Penthes in Pregny-Chambésy offers vast grounds, ancient trees, a gentle hillside with views toward the Alps, and almost no foot traffic.

This is my recommendation for families who want privacy, space, and the feeling of being in the countryside without leaving Geneva. Children can run freely here — and that freedom often produces the most natural, joyful images.

Best for: families with toddlers, large family groups, clients who value discretion.

5. Bains des Pâquis — for Something Bold

The iconic public baths on the lake offer a completely different energy — colourful, lively, unapologetically Genevan. For families who want portraits that feel spontaneous, relaxed and full of character, this is an unforgettable choice.

I recommend this location for families who love candid moments and are not afraid of a little movement and laughter in their images.

Best for: relaxed families, summer sessions, lifestyle-style portraits.

6. Private Locations — Hotels, Estates, Your Own Home

Some of the most beautiful family sessions I have photographed have taken place in private settings — at the family’s own home, in a rented villa, or at one of Geneva’s luxury hotels like the Beau-Rivage or Four Seasons.

Private locations remove all the unpredictability of public spaces and allow me to control the light and composition completely. For families with very young children, or for clients who prefer complete discretion, this is often the ideal choice.

What Makes a Great Location?

After years of photographing families in Geneva, I have learned that the best locations share three qualities:

  1. Beautiful natural light — ideally filtered or diffused, never harsh
  2. Depth and variety — so that a single session can include multiple moods and compositions
  3. Comfort — a place where your family can move naturally, without feeling observed

The location matters, but it is never more important than the people in front of my camera. My role is to find the intersection between a beautiful setting and your family’s authentic energy.

Frequently Asked Questions

How far in advance should I book a family session in Geneva?

I recommend booking at least 4–6 weeks in advance, especially for spring and autumn sessions when demand is highest. For specific locations that require permits, additional lead time may be needed.

Do you help choose the best location for our family?

Absolutely. During our pre-session consultation, I learn about your family — the ages of your children, the mood you are drawn to, any accessibility needs — and suggest two or three locations that would work beautifully.

Can we use a location not on this list?

Of course. If you have a meaningful place in mind — a favourite café, the garden of your apartment building, a spot by the lake where your children love to play — I am always happy to work with personal locations.

What time of day is best for outdoor family photos in Geneva?

The best light is typically 1–2 hours before sunset. In summer this can be as late as 8pm; in autumn and winter, 4–5pm. I always plan sessions around the light.

What happens if it rains on our session day?

I monitor the weather carefully in the days leading up to our session. If conditions are truly poor, we reschedule at no cost. Light overcast is actually wonderful for portraits — it creates soft, even lighting with no harsh shadows.
